Just as we’ve been told that eating our broccoli will make us strong like Popeye, drinking milk every day will give us whiter teeth, and an apple a day will keep the doctor away, we have always been nagged by our mums to eat our carrots because they improve our eyesight. Now what’s common between all these statements? They are all food myths.
Despite the old wives’ tale being yet another myth, there is still a small brink of truth in the statement, and that’s what I’ll be discussing about today.
How good our vision is can be determined by a handful of different scientific factors: the lens controls the manner in which light rays enter, the capillary muscles control the shape of said lens, photopigments sitting at the back of your eyes detect light, the retina converts light into nerve signals to be sent to your brain, and so forth.
Many people have said that eating carrots can recover our eyesight, but what aspect of our eye is it that’s actually improved? Carrots are rich with healthy concentrations of vitamin A. There are two types of vitamin A, with one of them being retinol. Retinol can be converted into retinene, and retinene is an important molecule that is required to produce photopigments that are found in the retina. But what does this exactly mean? The more photopigments you have sitting at the back of your eyes the more lights that enter your eyes can be converted into nervous impulses to be sent to your brain. While eating a lot of carrots may not necessarily rebuild and amend your sight in general, it can actually improve your night vision. When you’re in a dark room, there is less light entering your retina but your photopigments can make up for that by converting more of the thin light into impulses your brain can process.
So yes, eating carrots does refine your vision, that is your night vision only, but it’s not the inevitable method to go through if you’re looking to wholly polish your eyesight. A diet deficient in vitamin A can lead to night blindness and other eye problems, sure, but that doesn’t mean a bigger intake than the norm will make things better than it can optimally be. That is because eating carrots and sources with vitamin A such as lipids found in fish oil will improve your night vision, but not if you already have a balanced diet.
In every direction I turn to, be it in the internet, the posters in the streets, or even towards people I know and love, LASIK always seems to be the holy grail for improving your vision in retrospect to many people. Here’s a typical conversation I would here from one person with poor eyesight to another: “Oh God, my eyesight is really starting to fail me,” “Oh no worries mate, you could always try LASIK. I hear it does wonders.” NO! I won’t start this post with an intriguing question that will tempt you to read on, nor will I give you the answer at the end of the post, I’ll throw it to you right here right now: LASIK IS NEVER EVER THE WAY TO GO.
LASIK surgery is one of the most popular surgical procedures in the planet. Why? There is massive demand and desperation for people to heal their eyesight and as easily as poissble. Many jobs require a perfect eyesight, be it in the military, as a pilot, or just a regular security guard. Many people also get fed up with wearing contacts and glasses everyday. Naturally, the average person would always look for the easiest, most efficient method to restore his or her vision to 20/20 hindsight, and once desperation kicks in not even the cost of thousands of dollars per laser surgery would stop them. LASIK promises a permanent 20/20 vision just after a few blasts of lasers in your eye. The process includes cutting off the surface of your eye, reshaping your cornea using laser, and in a few minutes of other procedures ‘you can finally have the perfect vision you wanted for the rest of your life!’ Really though? It’s a little difficult for to imagine how people can feel rest assured as they lay on the surgical chair knowing that their cornea is just a few minutes away from being completely cut off! That alone would send jibbles down my spine. The cornea’s protective role serves as a filter. It blocks out some of the damaging ultraviolet wavelengths contained in sunlight. Your eyes in general would be very prone to serious injury from UV radiation without this protection. Cutting off the cornea then placing it back again is an extremely dangerous and delicate procedure, and it’s never done perfectly. According to actual research, LASIK always damages the cornea, and this may cause severe medical problems years later, leading to vision loss.
Many patients that have undergone LASIK surgery usually experience blurring, double vision, halos, starbursts, eye pain, ghosting, and chronic dry-eye every day of their lives despite the number of times the doctors tell them that these things are only temporary. Fact is, the doctors have gotten it the complete other way around. The improvement you’ll get in your eyesight (assuming the surgery went perfectly) will only be temporary and will last for a limited time only; it’s not permanent. What is permanent though is the adversaries the common patient will have to endure after the procedure.
My mum has undergone laser surgery and after a year’s worth of improved vision, not only did her eyesight start plummeting down again, but eventually it got even worse than it used to be. By then, she would always keep a cabinet full of eye medicines, she would always wear glasses whenever she goes around her usual business, and every now and then, she would even ask me to read her texts for her.
If you’re still not convinced, here’s a video I have found that uncovers most of the truth regarding LASIK surgery. This video includes patients who have suffered from the procedure, where one of these patients is a police officer, father of two, who took his own life due to depression after undergoing this surgery.
If you or someone else you know suffer from a deteriorating vision then I highly recommend you to stick with natural eye exercises and veer away from laser surgery that is bound to make your life so much worse. As many people can agree, sticking to regular eye exercises will most surely bring about eyesight improvements as fast as possible and as naturally as possible. Along with vitamin supplements, it is the only way that can truly rebuild your eyesight naturally. You should best begin by finding an eye improvement course and stick to it with full commitment and you will most undoubtedly see great results. The course I use is the Vision Without Glasses course. You can buy that course now for no more than only 37$, and I personally believe that it is one of the best courses out there and I’m definitely recommending it more than anything. I’m seeing great improvements myself!

As I have mentioned before, the capillary muscles in your eyes are always under constant work. Staring at computer screens, reading books with tiny fonts, writing, or even looking at the mirror after long hours in the bed will put constant strain in your eyes. The more your eyes are exposed to strain, the more your capillary muscles will start to wear out and get tired, eventually losing their efficiency. So what can we do to remove such strain from our eyes? In this article I will provide you with two easy and rather similar exercises that can help do just the job.
The Dot Exercise
In this exercise, take a pencil and mark a dot on a piece of paper. Now stare at it INTENSLEY and focus on making that dot as clear as possible. Keep on it until that dot comes into focus. Once that happens, you’ll notice that your eyes will start losing focus and that that dot will become more blurry. Now, close your eyes for an entire minute and give them an opportunity to relax. Placing your palms on your closed eyes would help. When the 60 seconds are over, this time let your eyes only slightly look at the dot without straining them. Instead of looking directly at the dot, try hovering and sliding your eyes just around it, and do make sure to blink every now and then. Now close your eyes again, picture the dot in your head, and then look at the dot again. You will know your eyes are feeling more relaxed once you’re able to see the dot more clearly.
The Word Exercise
In this second exercise (which is a bit like the last), think of a word that is five or more letters long (here’s one for you: ‘exercise’) and write it down clearly on paper. Now just like you did with the last exercise, stare intensely at the word and try and make all the letters visible and in view, but do try not to move the eyes. Focus completely on the word as you try and get a perfectly vivid image of that word in your head. If you stare and concentrate hard enough, the word will start to blur. Now close your eyes and allow them to relax as I mentioned before, and then start moving your eyes slowly over, around, and across each letter of the word. Again, don’t forget to blink a bit. Now the trick is not to force your eyes into moving towards where you want it to move. Just let it slide on autopilot while your role is to aid it as is it rotates around the word. The less you take control and force your eyes into action the more efficient this exercise will be. Letting the eyes move around effortlessly will help them work without straining itself.
Keeping a habit to do these little easy exercises once every day will help ensure better eyesight for the years to come as long as you are willing to stay committed and follow the other eye exercises I have posted previously in my blog, or you can download it right here.
